At what age can a TEEN start driver's ed?

A teen can start the classroom phase at the age of 14 and return at 15 to begin the behind the wheel phase.  

How long is the Drivers Ed course for TEENS?

Classroom Phase: 32 Hours

  • Duration: 2 hours per session 
  • Frequency: Typically held for 16 days, with 2 hours per day
  • Fast Track Option: If it's a fast track program, up to 6 hours of classroom instruction per day can be conducted.


Behind the Wheel Phase: 14 Hours 

  • 7 hours of behind the wheel training
  • 7 hours of observation


Additional Practice:  30 hours of documented practice with a parent or guardian

  • 20 hours during the day
  • 10 hours at night

 

Do TEENS need to be in school to take drivers education?

Texas law requires that persons under the age of 18 be enrolled in school and attending regularly to get a license.  The exception is that if a person has a high school diploma or a GED.

What do students have to bring the first day of class?

It is recommended that you bring a pen and paper to class every day.  Textbooks will be provided and the Texas Drivers Manual is on our website.  Please click here to download the Texas Drivers Manual.

For Cazares Parent Taught Behind the Wheel,where do parents register and pay the $20 fee?

Parents doing the Cazares Behind the Wheel Parent Taught Program must register with the State and pay a $20 fee PRIOR to starting the 14 hours behind the wheel portion.  The link to register is: https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/ParentTaught/PTSelect.aspx


How long must TEENS have a permit before getting a license?

Teens must hold on to their permit for at least 6 months and be 16 years of age to be eligible to take the official driving test.  The back of the permit states "must hold learner license until (date).  Teens are eligible to take the official driving test on the day AFTER the date on the back of the license provided that the drivers education course (classroom and driving) has been completed and the student is at least 16 years of age on that date.

Cazares Driving School is authorized by the Texas Department of Public Safety to administer the "Official Drive Test" for teens and adults to get a license.  We welcome students from ALL driving schools to test with us!

How can TEENS and ADULTS make an appointment with Cazares Driving School to take the official drivin

Cazares Driving School is authorized by the Texas Department of Public Safety to administer the "Official Drive Test" for teens and adults to get a license.  Students can choose to test at the DPS or with an authorized third party testing site.  

We currently offer driving test appointments Monday-Saturday at our Cazares McAllen (956) 683-1444 1700 N. 10th location and every other Saturday at our Cazares Weslaco (956) 351-5980 1521 W. Expressway 83, Weslaco.  You may call these locations for a drive test appointment.  

Cost:  $85 for (3) three drive test opportunities.  We accept credit or debit card payments or money orders made out to Cazares Driving School.  

As a TEEN, what will I need to take to DPS to get my PERMIT?

  • DEE-964 Form from your Drivers Ed Program (must say "for Learner License" at the top.
  • Student and one parent, legal guardian or adult 21 years of age or older living in the same household, willing to sign for the teen.  All must show legal residency with a Texas ID, driver's license, or valid immigration document.
  • Original Birth Certificate
  • Original Social Security Card
  • A 3rd Form of ID such as: Texas ID, Passport, or School ID
  • Verification of Enrollment less than 30 dys old (you can get this form from your high school attendance office or if you are home-schooled, click here for the Verification of Enrollment (VOE) form. 
  • If you have graduated you may take a copy of your diploma or transcript in lieu of the VOE form.
  • Residency documents if applicable
  • Two utility bills (light, cable, water).  These bills must be between 30-90days old and both be under the same name.
  • $$$ for the permit.  DPS accepts check, money orders or credit/debit cards.


As a TEEN, what forms do I need to bring with me to my OFFICIAL DRIVING TEST?

Required Paperwork for Teens for the Official Driving Test: (Example: Student took the course for their permit as a minor)

  • Bring your Parent with you!
  • DEE-964 Form issued from your Drivers Ed Program (this will be the second one issued to you and it must say "for Driver License" at the top.
  • Impact Texas TEEN Video Certificate of Completion (you can email to us at testingmcallen@gmail.com) Screenshots of your certificate are not accepted by DPS.
  • Completed 30 Hour Log
  • Valid, unexpired permit
  • Make sure your 6th month GDL date has passed (you have driven with a permit for 6+ months, you have completed the classroom and driving portions of drivers ed and you are at least 16 years of age).
  • $85 payment (check debit or money order, no cash)

As an ADULT, am I required to take a driver's education course?

Texas requires for adults 18-24 to take the 6-hour Adult Driver Education course.  We recommend that adults 25 and older take the course.  The course is comprehensive and very informative.  We understand that the requirements to get your driver's license can seem overwhelming.  We will help with the steps as you navigate through all the requirements.  No need to study before the course.  We will teach you everything you need to know and you will be taking the Road Rules and Road Signs test at our facility.  You will not be required to take your written tests at DPS.  Another perk is that with a copy of your certificate of completion, you may  be eligible for an insurance discount for the next three years which more than pays for the cost of the course! 

Do I need to study before coming to the 6-hr Adult Course?

No.  Our course is comprehensive.   We will teach you everything you need to know and you will be taking the Road Rules and Road Signs test at our facility.  You will not be required to take your written tests at DPS. 

Do you offer driving lessons for ADULTS?

Yes we do!  After taking the 6-Hour Adult classroom course, you can get a permit at DPS and return to us for private drives.  These private drives begin with an assessment and are tailored to your specific needs.  Our students have excellent pass rates on their driving tests, thanks to our experienced instructors and comprehensive driving education program.  The cost is $50/hr,  prepaid at the time of scheduling.  Ask about a discount for scheduling 4 or more drives!

You may call our office at (956) 683-1444 to schedule an appointment or ask to be accepted as walk-in.  You may also call our Cazares Weslaco 1521 W.
